    Listed for your consideration is the first edition of the World War I book THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME, FIRST PHASE, by John Buchan, with official illustrations and maps. Published in London by Thomas Nelson & Sons, Ltd., no date [1916-1917].  109 pages, fold-out map, in-text map, frontis and black and white plates.
    DESCRIPTION:
    First edition of Buchan's account of the war effort.  Has maps and photographs of the Somme battle sites, including a number of action ones showing British soldiers "crossing the parapets," tanks overrunning obstacles, mines exploding, etc.
    CONDITION:
    Hardcover.  Original paperbound boards, as published.  Corners and edges worn.  Spine strip worn away.  surface soil and spotting.  Book is tightly bound but one of the plates has detached and is laid in. Hinges have the start of tears but are holding firmly.  All maps and plates are present. The book is complete.  Pages are tanned with age and have some foxing (little brown age spots) but are supple, not fragile or crumbly. Overall in good condition, appropriate to its' age.
