Description
Joseph Heinrichs was one of the finest cookware makers in the United States from 1897 to the mid 1930s. He sold highest quality cookware through well recognized retailers, such as Tiffany, and directly to highly regarded hotels and restaurants. He used heavy gauge copper for his cookware; often used sterling silver instead of tinning for the inside lining of his cookware; and sometimes stamped the hotel or restaurant on the pieces made for them. This piece is in super condition - no dents cracks, etc.; is polished; has new tinning; and can be used. It does have some customary scratches which are routine for all antique copper cookware. Heinrichs calls this piece “round casserole with cover” in one place and “round au gratin dish” in another. It is 6” diameter at base; 8” diameter at top, excluding “handles”;11 3/4” diameter at top, including “handles”; 3” high; and made of heavy gauge copper, weighs 4 5/8 pounds. Imprinted on the bottom is: “JOS. HEINRICHS PARIS + NEW YORK PURE COPPER STERLING SILVER ELYSEE”. (see photo) Hotel Elysee opened at 60 E. 54th Street in New York City in the 1920s. Celebrities such as Tennessee Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Ava Gardner, and Marlon Brando called this hotel home. It is also home to the well known Monkey Bar. This high quality cookware was undoubtedly used at Hotel Elysee during its very early years. You will be very happy with this one.
