June 4, 1925 - 7 Years before his election as US President

Letter written 4 years after Roosevelt contracted polio.
This letter was written to assist with raising permanent financing for the American Legion to care for Disabled Veterans and to provide housing for the growing number of the children of Disabled Vets.

I have collected a whole lot of TRUMAN memorabilia since the 1960's.
I have been a life long admirer of President Harry S Truman. The man who NEVER wanted to be President became one of the greatest Presidents in our history. He was the LAST President that we had who did NOT go to college. He had a High School Diploma only yet he had more common sense than 3 or 4 of our Presidents combined.
A real World War I "WAR HERO" as a captain in the Army who is also known as just about the most ethical and HONEST Presidents we have ever had, His decision making was always quick and historically considered the most correct.
My Father served under President Truman during WWII and Truman was loved as our Commander-in-Chief by my father. My father could never speak as highly of President Franklin Roosevelt. My father spoke so highly of President Truman it gave birth to my lifelong study of his life and all about his wonderful character.
At the end of his presidency Harry returned home to Independence Missouri to live as "Mr. Citizen". After his presidency he NEVER sought fame and fortune for being a former President. In fact, he was offered a number of chances to earn BIG money as a former President but ALWAYS turned them down.
As he explained to those who solicited him, "What you want is the President whose office I no longer hold. I am now a citizen and not the President.
He is also the only president who left office with less money than when he entered the office and he certainly had very little money when he became President.
As President he stated "Any man who leaves an elected office with a lot more money than when he came in is a CROOK". Plus he also stated. "if you want a friend in Washington DC, get a dog!"
