This is an authentic, ultra-rare set of Apollo 11 Command Module Cufflinks issued by NASA and gifted to a senior White House staff member who attended the August 13, 1969 dinner in honor of the first astronauts to visit the moon. Hosted by President Richard Nixon, the VIP-only dinner was held at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, with all three astronauts in attendance. The cufflinks and tie clip feature the Apollo 11 Command Module in silver against an onyx background with a small pearl representing the moon in the upper right corner of each. The cufflinks were ordered in extremely limited quantity by NASA and manufactured by Balfour of Attleboro, MA. Sets were distributed to the Apollo 11 astronauts, select NASA officials, and certain government and private-sector VIPs. Today, these cufflinks are virtually impossible to find and command extraordinary sums in the rare instances they come to market.
Apollo 11 Astronaut Michael Collins served as Director of the Smithsonian's National Air & Space Museum and loaned his original cufflinks to the museum as part of a temporary display focused on the Apollo program. In 1984, he formally gifted the set to the museum, where they remain on permanent exhibit. The cufflinks offered here are identical to the Collins set and are part of the original order placed with Balfour in 1969. The cufflink set was acquired from the estate of a senior White House aide who served President Richard Nixon and other Presidents.
